Today’s reflection is on Surah Al-A’raf (Chapter 7), starting from verse 123. This part of the Quran narrates the story of Musa (Moses) and his confrontation with Pharaoh. It’s crucial to understand the historical context – the defeat of magicians, who were once supporters of Pharaoh but embraced Islam after witnessing the truth.
Pharaoh, fearing a shift in public sentiment, begins a brutal campaign to suppress dissent. He frames those turning to Islam as traitors and spies, promoting fear of death to maintain control. Amid this, some in Pharaoh’s government accept Islam, leading to an internal conflict.
Military commanders advise Pharaoh to annihilate Musa and his followers to prevent future unrest. They argue that those embracing Islam are a threat to Pharaoh’s rule. In response, Musa reassures his followers that seeking Allah’s help and maintaining faith are their greatest assets.
In response to concerns from some followers about the effectiveness of their situation despite embracing Islam, Musa acknowledged that Allah may destroy their enemy and grant them power. However, he warned that after obtaining power, their behavior would be scrutinized.
The story serves as a timeless lesson, emphasizing that the ultimate success lies not just in overcoming worldly struggles but also in maintaining faith and ethical conduct. Musa highlighted the significance of preserving one’s Iman (faith) as the most valuable asset. He addressed the misconception that embracing Islam would eliminate all problems, stressing that the test lies in upholding justice and righteousness even after obtaining power.
The story serves as a timeless lesson. Muslims have faced challenges throughout history – colonization, oppression, and internal conflicts. The promise of victory and power often raises expectations, but the crucial test is how believers behave once granted power. The warning is clear – power should not corrupt, and Muslims must uphold justice and righteousness.
Reflecting on this story, we should consider our response to challenges and victories. The ultimate success lies not just in overcoming worldly struggles but also in maintaining faith and ethical conduct. As we seek improvement in our circumstances, let’s ensure our actions align with the principles of justice, compassion, and faithfulness to Allah’s guidance.
