Battle of Badr
This is the first-ever battle that decided the future of Islam. Those who participated in Badr battle held in high esteem throughout the history of Islam. Here is the brief account of the battle.
The Prophet ﷺ paid special attention to the Abu Sufyan caravan that just escaped towards Syria during Dhul Ushairah invasion. He sent Ubaidullah and Said bin Zaid to monitor the return of that caravan. They reported that the caravan is on its way back to Makah. It was carrying a huge amount of wealth. Muslims had left an enormous sum of the wealth in Makah when they fled to Madina and probably this caravan consisted of that wealth as well. They wanted to make up and take it back.
Immediately, the Prophet ﷺ ordered to prepare for an invasion. His intention was not a large-scale war, instead to intercept the caravan. He told the companion that those who have their animals ready should join him immediately.
There were 313 men in the Muslim army. 82 Emigrants; 61 from Aws and 170 from Khazraj. Only two horses of Zubair al Awwam and Miqdad bin Aswad and 70 camels were with them.
Abdullah bin Umm Maktoum was assigned the affairs of Madina. Mus’ab bin Umair was given the white flag that represented the whole pa rticipants. A black flag was given to Ali to represent the Emigrants and another one was given to Saa’d Bin Mu’ad to represent Ansar. Two horse riders, Zubair and Miqdad were given the responsibility of the right and left flanks respectively.
