- Badr the Second
Quraish determined to revenge for the fatal defeat in Badr. The leaders like Abu Jahl, Utba and Umayah were killed in Badr. The young leaders Abu Sufyan, Ikrimah bin Abu Jahl and Safwan bin Umayah led the campaign to take revenge. They dedicated the profit of the escaped Abu Sufyan caravan to buy weapons. The familiar tribes Kinanah and Tehama supported the move. Some nomad tribes also extended the help. Thus, an army of three thousand men with three thousand camels marched towards Madina. Fifteen women also participated to inspire the fighters.
Abu Sufyan was the Supreme Commander. The cavalry was under the supervision of Khalid bin Waleed. The flag was entrusted to Banu Abd Dar. The army of Makah arrived Madina on Friday 6th Shawwal, 3 A.H.
Quraish’s plan was to make a surprise attack. Abbas bin Abdul Mutalib, the secret convert who is still in Makah informed Prophet ﷺ about Quraish move. He sent an emissary who arrived at Madina before Quraish. The Prophet ﷺ immediately held a special meeting with his followers to discuss how to defend. The state of emergency was declared in Madina. His idea was that Muslims should stay in Madina and defend it. This proposal was accepted even by hypocrite leader Abdullah bin Ubay.
But some followers opposed this idea, especially those who missed the Badr battle. Eventually, the Prophet ﷺ accepted the idea of fighting outside Madina. But these followers felt guilty of forcing the Prophet ﷺ to go outside the city and they asked the Prophet ﷺ to change his mind. The Prophet ﷺ refused to change the opinion and he said:
مَا يَنْبَغِي لِنَبِيٍّ إِذَا لَبِسَ لأْمَتَهُ أَنْ يَضَعَهَا حَتَّى يُقَاتِلَ [1]
It is not befitting to a Prophet that once he had put on armor, he should take it off until the fight took place.”
Muslim Army
The Muslim army was of three divisions:
- Mus’ab bin Umair led the battalion of Muhajiroon
- Usaid bin Hudair led Aws tribe of Ansar
- Al Hubaab bin Al Mundhir led Khazraj tribe of Ansar.
The army made up of one thousand fighters including one hundred armored men and fifty horsemen. The army marched towards Uhd Mountains. On the way, the Prophet ﷺ reviewed his troop and found some fighters below fourteen years old. He considered them minors and sent them back. However, two of them proved their ability and the Prophet ﷺ allowed them to participate
