Khutbah of Jumu’ah

Conditions of Khutbah:

1. Delivering Khutbah during Dhuhr prayer time.
2. Purity from Najas.
3. Purity from major and minor impurities (الحدث).
4. Covering Awrah.
5. Delivering it in Arabic language.
6. Sitting between two Khutbah with Tuma’neenah (طمأنينة).
7. Doing in Wala (الولاَء consecutively).

Obligations (أَرْكَان) of Khutbah

1. Saying Hamd (praise) to Allah such as الحَمْدُ لله in both Khutbahs.
2. Saying صَلاَة to our Prophetrsuch as اللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ in both Khutbahs.
3. Instructing (وَصِيَّة) Taqwa (obeying Allah) in both Khutbas.
4. Reading a full verse(آيَة) from Quran (The verse should have complete meaning/مفهمة) in one of the two Khutbas, preferably in the first one.
5. Praying for hereafter benefit of the believers in one of the two Khutbas, preferably in the second one.

Sunan of Khutbah

1. Delivering Khutbah from a pulpit (المِنْبَر) or any other higher place.
2. Having three steps in the pulpit.
3. Placing the pulpit in the right side of Mihraab.
4. Khateeb saying Salaam three times: while entering, while being closer to pulpit and after climbing it.
5. Holding the sword or bow or stick with his left hand and reclining on it.
6. Facing the audience without turning around.
7. Reciting Arkaan in the due order.
8. Reading Surah Al Ikhlas (سورة الإخلاص) while sitting between two Khutbahs.
9. Making Dua for the Muslim rulers.

Language of Khutbah

Jumu’ah Khutbah should be in Arabic language. Let us see why a whole Khutbah should be in Arabic language.

Any speech becomes attractive when the speaker expresses the emotions by hand gestures. In the normal speeches, it is better to use hand gestures. But خطبة الجمعة  is not a normal speech; so, the hand gesture is مَكْرُوه  in it. Rather, it is a kind of worship that should be done as taught by our Prophet r.

By unanimous opinion, all أرْكَان (necessary elements) of Khutbah should be in Arabic.  Instructing Taqwa is one of the أرْكَان of Khutbah. The whole Khutbah is the instruction, so the whole Khutbah should be in Arabic Language.

مُوَالاَة (reciting the all أَرْكَان of Khutbah consecutively without any gap in-between) is the one of the conditions of Khutbah’s validity. When a Khateeb speaks a lot (in-between two Arkaan) in any language other than the Arabic, it breaks the موَلاَة. So, the whole Khutbah should be in Arabic language.
