Tayammum (الّتَيَمُّم)
Tayammum is to apply (wipe) the soil/dust (تُرَاب) to the face and hands with some specific condition. It stands in the place of Wudu and bath.
Tayammum is allowed only if one is unable to use the water. The causes of inability are as follows:
- Absence of water.
- Available water is just enough for drinking only.
- Fear of falling in to danger if he uses the water.
Conditions (Shuroot) of Tayammum
- Inability (العَجْز) to use water.
- Removing impurity (نَجَس) before Tayammum.
- Performing Tayammum after the commencement of intended prayer time.
- Using the pure dust soil.
- There should be two strikes (ضَرْب) over dust by palms; one for face and another for both hands.
- Trying to find out the direction of Qiblah before performing Tayammum, if he doesn’t know the direction.
- Perform only one obligatory prayer (فَرْض عَيْن) with one Tayammum. (Each فرض عين requires separate Tayammum).
Obligatory elements (Furood) of Tayammum
- Moving/transferring (نَقْل) the dust to the face and hands. So, Tayammum is not valid if the face is wiped by sprinkling the soil on it.
- The Intention (نِيَّة).
- Wiping the face with soil.
- Wiping the two hands including the elbows with another strike of soil.
- Tarteeb.
- Saying بِسْمِ الله.
- Facing Qiblah.
- Brushing the tooth.
- Striking the both hands together over soil.
- Putting the fingers wide open (تَفْرِيق) on soil when striking.
- While wiping the face, move the palms from the top to the bottom. While wiping the hands, start with right hand.
- Shaking off (تَخْفِيف) the dust from his hands before the wipe.
- تَشْبِيك(interlocking) of fingers.
- Doing Furood one after another quickly (الوَلاَء).
- Dhikr and Dua after it (as in Wudu).
- Step 1: saying بِسْمِ الله and brushing the teeth.
- Step 2: With Niyyat, doing the first strike and wiping the full face.
- Step 3: doing the second strike and wiping the both hands as follows:
- Wiping the back of right hand fingers with inner side of the left-hand fingers and passing them through the arm up to elbow.
- Wiping the inner side of the right arm with left palm.
- Wiping the back of the right thumb with the inner side of the left thumb.
- Wiping the left hand with right hand in above said method.
- Wiping the both palms against each other.
- Interlocking (تَشْبِيك) of fingers.
