Know three types of Najas
Know kinds of Najas
Understand how to remove Najas
Najas (النجَس) means the impurity. Any filthy thing that generally makes the Salaat invalid is called Najas. It is prohibited to apply Najas to our body without any valid reason. During the prayer, one should keep his body, dress and the place clean. It is necessary to remove any Najas found in mosque, Mushaf or on any other respected things.
Najas has many kinds in Shafi Fiqh.
- Liquid intoxicants (مسْكِر مَائع) such as the wine.
- Dog and pig.
- The dead body (الميت). The dead bodies of the followings are exempted: Human being, fish, locust (جَرَاد) and the hunted animal that was not able to be slaughtered and fetus (جَنِين) died as the result of the slaughter.
- Dung (رَوْث) and urine of an animal even if the animal is of eatable (مَأْكُول).
- Mad’y (مَذْي) and Wad’y (وَدْي). The both are the white discharges of the private organs. Mad’y is seen in yellow as well. Mad’y normally comes out when one is sexually excited. But that desire would be weaker than that of semen discharge. Wad’y usually comes immediately after the urination or while lifting the weight.
- Blood, the pus (القَيْح) and purulent matter (الصّدِيد).
- Vomit (القيئ) that comes from stomach.
The followings are pure (طاهِر):
Semen (مَنِيّ) of the human being is pure.
Milk of human being and eatable animal is pure.
The phlegm (بَلْغَم) and the liquid that comes from the mouth of the sleeper are pure if they didn’t come from the stomach.
The liquid of woundجُرْح) ) and the blister(جُدْرِيّ) is pure if there is no change.
The feather and the hair of the eatable animal are pure if they separated while they are alive or after the slaughter.
Najas and Mutanajjis (النجس والمتَننجِّس)
In Islamic concept, Najas means the substance that is impure.
Mutanajjis means something that has Najas on it such as the cloth that has urine on it. Here the cloth is Mutanajjis and it could be purified by removing the urine that is Najas. But the Najas itself- for example the urine – could not be purified, rather it could be removed.
However, the following Najas could be purified. They are: - Wine that becomes vinegar on its own.
- Skin of the dead body that is tanned.
- The living being which was born from Najas such as the worm from the dead body.
Najas are of three types - Mugallad or Heavy(مُغَلَّظ):
The dog and the pig are considered as Najas Mugallad. After removing the filth, it should be washed by water seven times, one of which should be with the soil mixed water. - Mukhaffaf or Slight(مُخَفَّف):
The urine of the baby boy below two years that fed only with breast-milk is considered as Najas Mukhaffaf. By sprinkling the water on it, this Najas is purified. The water should be more than the urine. - Mutawassit or moderate(مُتَوَسِّط):
All other than above two types of Najas are considered as Mutawassit. This Najas is either detectable(عَيْنِيّ) such as the drop of the wet urine on a cloth or not detectable(حُكْمِيّ) such as the dry urine on a cloth which has no color, taste or smell. Both of them are subject to purification.
