Chapter #25السِّرُّ والجَهْرLoud (Jahr) and silent (Sirr) recitation

 Know places of Jahr (الجَهْر)
 Know places of Sirr (السِّر)

Loud/Jahr (الجَهْر) and silent/Sirr(السِّرّ) recitation
Loud and silent recitation
In Salaat, sometimes the Qira’a (Quran recitation) and Dhikr are performed in loud voice (جهْر) and sometimes they are performed in low voice (سِرّ).
Loud (Jahr) recitation is Sunnah when reciting the followings:

  1. Takbeer (saying الله أكبر)
  2. Tasmee’a (تَسْمِيع/saying سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَه)
  3. Salaam (saying السلامُ عليكُم)
For Imam and Muballig (مبَلِّغ: a Ma’moom who says Takbeer in louder voice to make other مأموم heard), it is Sunnah to recite loudly in above three cases. But the intention of increasing the voice should be the recitation of Dhikr. An Imam should not increase the volume with the only intention of making مأْمُوم heard.
  4. Ameen (آمِين) of Imam and Ma’moom in any Salaat that is performed loudly (الصلاة الجَهْرِيَّة). A Ma’moom should not recite Ameen loudly for his Fatiha; rather he can recite it loudly for his Imam’s Fatiha only.
  5. The Fatiha and Surah of non-Ma’moom (such as Imam and Munfarid /مُنْفَرِد/single prayerer) in following Salaats:
    • Fajr prayer (صلاة الصُّبح)
    • Jumu’ah prayer (صَلاة الجُمعَة)
    • First two Rak’a of Maghrib and Isha
    • Taraweeh prayer (صلاة التراويح)
    • Witr prayer (صَلاة الوتر) of Ramadan
    • Kusoof Qamar prayer (صلاة خسوف القمر)
    • Two Eids prayer (صلاة العيدين)
    • Two Rak’a of Tawaf in night
    • Qada(قَضَاء /missed) prayer at night except two Eid.
  6. Qunoot of Imam and Ameen of Ma’moom for his Imam’s Qunoot.
  7. Dhikr and Dua of Imam after completing Salaat. Here Imam can recite Dhikr and Dua loudly with the intention of teaching the attendants or with the hope of saying آمين from his Ma’mooms.
(A short Dua from Quran and Sunnah is given in the end of this book)
Silent (Sirr) recitation is Sunnah when reciting the following
  8. Reciting Iftitaah (دعاء الافتتاح), Taawwudh (أعوذ بالله…) and other Adhkaar (الأذكار).
  9. Ma’moom saying Ameen (آمِين) for his own Fatiha.
  10. Ma’moom saying ثَناء (from فَإِنَّك تَقْضِي to أتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ ) in Qunoot.
  11. Munfarid and Ma’moom (who is not able to hear Qunoot of Imam) reading Qunoot.
  12. Dhikr and Dua after Salaat.
    Notes:
    • Loud voice of woman in Salaat should be lower than that of man. If there is non-Mahram, she should not recite loudly.
