Jumu’ah Prayer

Friday is the best day of the week. Friday Jumu’ah prayer is the best of all prayers. Jumu’ah prayer is obligatory for all male Muslim who is Mukallaf (مُكَلَّف) and Muqeem (مُقِيم resident) or Mutawattin (مُتَوطِّن) having no legitimate excuse for abandoning it.

So, Jumu’ah prayer is not obligatory for woman, traveler and anyone who has legitimate excuse for attending it such as severe illness. If the traveler decided to stay in a place for more than four days, then Jumu’ah prayer is mandatory for him.

To be valid, Jumu’ah prayer must be organized by Mustawtineen (مستوطِنِين those who inhabit in the place as the permanent residents). If forty Mustawtineen stay in a village (بَلَد) then it is compulsory for them to establish Jumu’ah in their place.

Conditions of Jumu’ah

  1. Establishing Jumu’ah within the boundary of the village(بَلَد)/town.
  2. Only one Jumu’ah in a place unless there is a difficulty in gathering in one place.
  3. Performing Jumu’ah within the time of Dhuhr prayer.
  4. Forty Mustawtineen should attend Jumu’ah.
  5. Performing its first Rak’a in Jama’a.
  6. Performing it after two valid Khutbah.

Sunnah way of preparing for Jumu’ah prayer

  1. Bathing after Fajr. It is better to bath little before going to mosque.
  2. Early going to the Masjid except for one who delivers Khutbah (خُطْبَة).
  3. Cutting mustache, clipping nail, removing armpit hair (إِبْط) and pubic hair (عَانَة) and being free from any bad smell or filth.
  4. Wearing the best clothes. White cloth is preferred.
  5. Wearing turban (التعَمُّم).
  6. Applying perfume.
  7. Not using vehicle (excused if necessary) and walking to Mosque.
  8. Listening to Khutbah carefully.

Following things are Haram

  1. Travelling after Fajr if he fears missing of Jumu’ah prayer.
  2. Engaging in business or job after the Adhan of Khutbah.
  3. Praying any Salaat except التَّحِيَّة after Imam climbs the pulpit (مِنْبَر).

Following things are Karaaha

  1. Not bathing for one who wants to attend Jumu’ah.
  2. Crossing over people’s necks (to reach the front Saff) without any reason.
  3. Talking and Ihtibah during Khutbah (الاحْتِبَاء is a kind of sitting in which he is pulling the knees up to his stomach, wrapping the arms around them and joining the hands in front).
