Dafan, Talqeen and Ta’ziyat

Dafan

Dafan (الدفَن) is to bury the deceased in Qabr (قَبَر). The minimum requirement of a Qabr is that it should be a dig that prevents the smell and predatory animals(السِّبَاع). The roof of the dig should not touch Mayyit. It is compulsory to make him lie towards Qiblah and close Qabr in such a way that it prevents the dust from falling on the Mayyit. The perfect depth of a Qabr is 4.5 arms(أذْرُع).  Lahd (لَحْد/digging at the bottom of the grave on the Qiblah side) is better than Shiq (شِقّ/digging a trench in the middle of the grave) unless the land is soft(رِخْوَة). Daytime is better than night.  The pregnant woman should not be buried unless the death of the embryo (جَنِين) is confirmed. If the life of embryo is expected, then the embryo should be taken out.

It is Sunnah for those who attended Dafan to throw three handful soil to fill Qabr. In the first throw, he has to say

From the earth, We created you,, and.

In the second throw, he has to say

and into it We will return you

In the third throw, he has to say

from it We will extract you another time

It is Sunnah to raise Qabr to a height of a span(شِبْر). Flattening (تَسْطِيح)is better than making it hump-structure(تَسْنِيم). Placing a green plant above Qabr is also recommended.

Dafan is the responsibility of men.

Talqeen

Staying for a couple of minutes/an hour(ساعة) near Qabr and saying Talqeen is Sunnah.

The one who recites تَلْقِين should sit in front of Mayyit whereas other people should stand nearby.

Talqeen is as follows:

Oh slave of Allah! Remember the time when you left this world. You testified that there is no God but Allah, He is alone and has no partner and Muhammadris the messenger of Allah. You also testified that Janna (paradise) is the truth, Hell is the truth, Resurrection is the truth, the Final day will surely come and there is no doubt in it. You also testified that Allah resurrects those people who are in the grave. You accepted Allah as Rab (Lord), Islam as the religion, Muhammad r as the prophet, Quran as the Imam, Ka’aba as the Qiblah and the believers as the brothers. My lord is Allah, there is no God except Allah, and I put trust in Allah and He is lord of the great Arsh.
