Madina Mosque:

Immediately he arrived in Madina, the first step forward was to build a mosque. He selected the same place where his camel knelt down. It belonged to two orphans named Sahl and Suhail. The Prophet ﷺ purchased it and cleared the ground which was filled with palm trees, shrubs, and graves.

The first version of the mosque was very simple built by mud bricks and the structure supported by palm tree trunks. Adjacent to the mosque, two rooms for his family and a shelter for poor migrants were built. The shelter is later called “Suffah”[1].

In Madina, the number of Muslims kept increasing. There was no proper channel to call them to Masjid to perform five times prayer. The companions discussed with the Prophet ﷺ. They suggested the Jews’ custom of blowing the horn and the Christian custom of the ringing bell. The Prophet ﷺ was not satisfied with either opinion. Umar t opined to assign somebody to call

 الصلاة جامعة

The Prophet ﷺ approved it. Later, Abdulla bin Zaid saw a dream in which he was taught the words of Adhan[2]. The Messenger asked him to teach the Adhan to Bilal, the man of a beautiful voice. He recited and Bilal repeated it loudly. Umar t hurried to the Prophet ﷺ to inform that he also saw the same dream.  Finally, the Prophet ﷺ verified it and Adhan becomes the most important slogan of Islam.

Mutual Comradeship

Madina was a strange land to emigrants (Muhajir). They couldn’t find any home in Madina. Their family was in Makah. Madinite Muslims (Ansar) were not such wealthy people capable of sponsoring the whole emigrants. There were also no government(public) funds to utilize for their benefit. So the Prophet ﷺ made a historical decision to pair an emigrant from Makah with a native of Madina. For example, an immigrant (Muhajir) named Abdul Rahman bin Awf[3] was made a brother of Helper (Ansar -native of Madina) Saa’d bin Rabee[4], thus the both become brothers. It was a unique brotherhood system the whole world ever witnessed.

Prophet ﷺ assembled both Muhajir and Ansar in Anas Bin Malik home to make this new social system. At that time, they were 90 people.

[1] Suffah (الصفة) was the platform built for the poor migrants who don’t have house in Madeenah. Later it emerged as the center of the seekers of knowledge.

[2] Adhan (الأذان) is the call for five times prayer..

[3] Abdul Rahman bin Awf(عبد الرحمن بن عوف) is one of the early converts of Islam.

[4] Saa’d bin Rabee(سعد بن الربيع) is one of the rich companions of the prophet ﷺ. He offered half of his wealth to his co-brother Abul Rahman bin Awf, but Abul Rahman gently refused.
